CITY TOUR AND PART OF AN INDIAN FAMILY
Sabaa’h al khayr! (Good morning). Today I did the city tour with a friendly driver from Pakistan in his thirties named Safdar. He had a very heavy accent, has been living in Dubai for four years and he learned his English here. He could have fooled me - sometimes we were at cross purposes. He took me through Dubai in four hours and showed me everything I wanted to see. Well, not always. Suddenly he stopped at the Islamic Gallery. Since the driver could not explain why I should go inside (he said something about 'art' so I had my presumptions) I did go to see what this thing was all about. It was an art gallery, not a cheap one (Dubai!) and they told me I could buy anything I saw there. I knew it. Standard operating procedure of the city tour. To a salesman I pointed at my small back pack.
"No go", I said.
“We ship all over the world sir”, he tried.
"Of course you do". I smiled at him and left.
My driver was rather astonished that I reappeared after just five minutes.
“Skip all galleries and other obligatory stuff”, I told him. "Instead, take me to the nearest Starbucks".
He took me to the Souk Madinat Jumeirah, a brand new mall built in the style of how shops and markets looked like in earlier days of Dubai. I must admit, it's really beautifully done. Meanwhile I enjoyed a good Starbucks latte. I wanted to know in which part of Dubai we actually were. I took this map out of my back pack which I had taken from the hotel. We both looked attentive at the map, looked at each other and burst into a laugh. The bloody map was in Arabic so useless to both of us. We continued our tour over Jumeirah Road, passed the Jumeirah Beach Hotel and we stopped at the Burj Al Arab, the only seven star hotel in the world! I didn't even dare to go in. At Jumeirah Beach I walked the surf of the Arabic Gulf with it's beautiful blue warm water. Then of course I had to visit what they call the 'eighth wonder of the world': Palm Jumeirah. Man-made islands shaped like a huge palm tree.
My driver dropped me off at the ‘Mall of the Emirates’, the largest shopping mall of Dubai.
I had lunch, looked around in the very clean and well-kept mall but decided once again that shopping malls are definitely not my cup of tea. On the way back to the hotel we passed the highest-building-in-the-word-to-be the Burj Dubai. Nobody knows how high it is going to be. It remains a secret because Dubai is afraid that some other city will immediately start building an even higher building. Taking the Sheikh Zayed Road with the Jumeirah Emirates Towers and countless hotels we drove back into the city at 120 km/h. In four hours time I had seen a lot of Dubai.
In the evening a mini bus picked me up at my hotel for my dinner cruise on the Dubai Creek. The driver came from India, drove like there was no tomorrow and all the other passengers came from India as well. It appeared to be one family. So it was Hindi all the way. The cruise on an original Arabic dhow was nice. However, while cruising the Dubai Creek at very pleasant night temperatures and with an almost full moon, I caught myself thinking of the beautiful mountains of Austria!
Back to my hotel it was the same mini bus with the same driver and the same Indian family. They recognized me and I immediately became a member of the family. I had no idea what they had been drinking, but grandma from Calcutta who earlier that evening moved herself with a walking frame now jumped aboard the mini bus like she was twenty. It was again Hindi all the way but sometimes they use English words: rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb four o'clock rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb twelve rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb I will not! rhubarb rhubarb… Tiring. Amidst my new family I fell asleep in the mini bus. Within ten minutes I was back at my hotel, crept to my room and slept on. Tomorrow is my last day in Dubai. Ma’aa al salaama! (Goodbye).
