ON SUMATRA
Just a short report from Sumatra. Today (Friday) I flew with Mandala Airlines from Batam to Medan. The luggage went through the x-ray machine and I had to go through a metal detector. It went ‘beep’ but they let me pass. So much for aviation security. Boarding was typically Asian: organised chaos. The armrest of a seat of a woman in front of me fell off, but luckily nothing else happened. The plane was reasonably full, but I was sitting in the back of the plane in an aisle seat and there was no-one sitting beside me. So I had three seats for myself! I moved to the window seat so I could have a look at Sumatra from the air, which was a beautiful sight indeed. The airport of Medan was a madhouse. Everybody wanted to carry my luggage, but I turned them down. First I wanted to find myself a proper hotel. Four pretty girls behind counters tried to get my attention by shouting ‘taxi, taxi?’ They all wanted to arrange a taxi for me into Medan. I went to the counters of the hotels in the arrival terminal, but there was nobody there. Then a young woman from another hotel caught my attention and she offered me a good hotel, with a huge discount, breakfast included and a free shuttle bus from the airport to the hotel. I accepted this offer. The ride to the hotel took about twenty minutes and it started to drizzle. The ‘Grand Angkasa International Hotel’ at the Jalan Sutomo was really beautiful! My room was at the sixth floor and while I was enjoying the view, it started to rain cats and dogs: a tropical downpour. After the rain had gone I went outside to have a look around in Medan. For dinner I had ‘salmon porridge’ which tasted really nice. It looked like soup, but it was sort of sweet and one had to put all kind of different things in it. Later I asked for sambal (hot peppers) with my rice dish and the staff were surprised that I knew these Indonesian side dishes. They got it for me. However, this was green sambal and it was extremely pedis, very, very spicy!
Tomorrow I want to go to the Lake Toba so I went to the hotel concierge. She told me that by bus it would take me at least five to six hours and by cat probably four. So I rented a car, with a driver, for 24 hours which cost me forty euro’s (US$59). So, tomorrow I leave for Lake Toba and I will try to see more of Atjeh on Sunday and Monday.
